The Villa
Griya Atma is a four bedroom villa. The name Griya Atma means “Abode of the Soul”. The villa is designed as a modern interpretation of Balinese traditional living, each room on ground floor opens on a wide patio. The Master bedroom faces the rice fields and the infinity swimming pool. It has en-suite bathroom with bathtub and an outdoor shower. It also has a indoor daybed. Two other bedrooms on ground floor face the swimming pool. Both have indoor and outdoor bathroom with showers. The fourth bedroom, on second floor faces other rice fields. An hour and fifteen minutes’ drive from Ngurah Rai international airport, Ubud is Bali’s centre for fine arts, dance and music; while the surrounding villages are home to Bali’s most accomplished painters, dancers, musicians and carvers. This remarkable town is encompassed by magnificent terraced rice fields, rivers, traditional villages, art and craft communities, ancient temples and palaces. It is located 300 metres above sea level in the foothills of the central mountain range; this gives it a fresher, more pleasant climate than the southern coastal regions.

The numerous art galleries in Ubud feature traditional and modern work; the museums showcase the island’s rich history, and the shops and the market stalls sell handicrafts, jewellery, woodcarvings, textiles, paintings and antiques. Accommodations

Like many others, we fell in love with the ‘Island of the Gods’ and her people and feel very privileged to have been able to lease from the local owners, the land on which to build this peaceful haven.

The Location
Villa Awang Awang is a 50 minutes drive from the airport and is situated in the cool highlands 5km from Ubud – famous for its fine art galleries, restaurants and rich cultural life. The 10 minute drive is through stunning scenery of lush ricefields, mountains and the sacred volcano Gunung Agung towering in the distance.

The House
The villa is designed by Balinese architect Ir. Ida Bagus Wiadnyana according to ancient traditions with the correct alignments toward the Holy Mountain. Traditional materials are used throughout to harmonize with the environment – alang alang thatched roofing, hand-made terracotta floor-tiles, stone and marble, all crafted by local artists. The house is cooled by fans and natural cross breezes over water gardens. Entry is via the traditional Balinese gate-way protected by stone guardians and along a garden path through tranquil lotus and water-lily filled fish ponds. Antique Javanese doors open onto the main living area with its soaring alang alang roof and spectacular views from the open terrace.

Bedrooms
Antique Javanese doors open from the living area to three bedrooms. The main bedroom contains a queen-sized bed made from old teak wood and an antique Javanese batik table. A dressing room leads to the marble bathroom and outdoor garden shower. The second bedroom has an antique Javanese queen-sized bed while the third contains two single beds. A large terrazzo and marble bathroom with a deep tub, outdoor shower and double vanity is shared between the two rooms.

Lower Level
Stairs lead down to the open dining-area, with views across the lush valley. The dining table is constructed from sections of an antique Javanese house and comfortably seats up to 10. The house contains many unique pieces of antique furniture from Java and Lombok and is decorated with traditional weavings, carvings, statues and antique shadow puppets. There is a television, CD player, VCR, DVD and a small collection of CD’S and books.

Night Life
World-famous music and dance performances, jazz cafes and fine restaurants are just 10 minutes away – at the villa we can only offer you the sounds of nature, the cascading river, frogs croaking, crickets chirping and the scent of frangipani and night jasmine. Due to the open plan of the house, you may see the glimmer of a fire-fly, hear the call of our beautiful blue and pink spotted Tokay who resides in the roof or receive the occasional visit from a frog. If you are not ‘creature-friendly’ this may not be the place for you.

The Village and Staff
The villa is part of the village of Melayang and our guests are always warmly welcomed at the many temple ceremonies. Staff can assist you with the sarong and sash required to attend ceremonies.
As in all Balinese houses, the Gods have their home within our home. Every morning our local priest presents offerings to the Gods both inside the house and at the various house temples in the garden.

The Location

Villa Sebali is just 15 minute’s drive from the centre of Ubud, the cultural and artistic heart of Bali. All on good roads, half the drive is through typical villages, beautiful rice fields and tropical forest, and half past interesting art galleries, antique and craft shops, and restaurants. Ubud is about one and a quarter hours drive from the airport.

The house is built round three sides of a grassy, flower-ringed courtyard, with the fourth side an infinity pool looking down over a cascade of lotus and water-lily ponds to the orchard. It has four very special bedroom suites and combines the luxury of air-conditioned bedrooms with the delight of open air living. There is a fully equipped kitchen, a library/games room and a table tennis room. We have included many environmentally-friendly features, from the thick, alang-alang roofs which provide wonderful insulation, to solar powered water heating and electricity systems, and natural waste water treatment.

Accommodation
The house is approached by a tree fern-shaded path leading from the front courtyard with space for three or four cars, over an ornamental pool and into the main building.

Dining area : spacious and equipped for up to 12 at table. It is open to the garden at one side and has two steps down to the living area.

Kitchen : fully equipped with large fridge-freezer and permanent chilled drinking water.

Living area : an enormous room opens to the garden with ample seating and many art works.

All the above areas have rich terra-cotta coloured floor tiles, a lovely combination of warmth for the eye and coolness for the room.

Stairs lead from the living area to Sky Bedroom Suite : vast, with a fantastic cathedral ceiling and flower-edged terraces facing all four points of the compass with views to die for!. A large dressing area leads to the bathroom which is partly open air with wash basin, WC, bath, separate shower. One of its four terraces is covered and has seating for relaxing and admiring the garden and view.

From the living area a lobby leads to the south wing with Forest Bedroom Suite : equipped with twin beds which can also be joined to make one king size bed. The dressing area leads to the shower room with wash basin and separate WC. A door leads through to the Library : an enchanting rotunda which can also be reached directly by steps from the garden. Equipped with flat screen TV, books, games and comfortable seating, this room can either be used as a sitting room for the Forest Bedroom, or as a communal room for all guests.

Again from the living area, a short path leads over the lotus pool to the independent Sunset Bedroom Suite : this is another generous room with cathedral ceiling and a queen sized bed. The spacious dressing area leads through to the bathroom with basin, WC, shower and garden. It has its own pretty patio.

Across the courtyard and opposite the library is another independent building Sunrise Bedroom Suite : as the name suggests, this huge room with its magnificent ceiling and king size bed faces east, towards Mt Agung, and has double doors opening onto a raised deck shaded by a flower-festooned pergola. Steps lead down to the pool and courtyard. There is a big dressing area leading through to the biggest bathroom of all which, again, is partly open to the sky and has its own garden. It is equipped with bath, basin, shower and separate WC.

The garden
The garden is lavishly planted with many sweet-smelling trees and flowers. Beside the pool is a pretty bale, a traditional grass-roofed pavilion for shaded relaxation, while below it a path winds through the lotus ponds down to the orchard with its wide range of tropical fruit trees. As these mature, guests will be able to pick their own choice of fruit.

Staff
The villa is managed locally by the incomparable Rita Dewi and has six full time staff: three in the house including a cook, two gardeners and a night security guard. Our house staff will prepare your breakfasts, maintain the house and rooms immaculately, and be on hand to aid and advise you. There are many things to do and see – artistic, sporting, cultural, spiritual and purely self-indulgent – within easy reach.

Note: Villa Sebali has many ponds and a big swimming pool so guests bring young children at their own risk. The villa can be made wheelchair accessible.
